Recapping the 15th Annual African American Cultural Celebration
I can’t believe it’s nearly the middle of February! Where has the month gone? Right before the month began, I kicked off Black History Month by attending the 15th Annual African American Cultural Celebration on January 30th. This free event was held at the NC Museum of History in downtown Raleigh, and this years theme was Civil Rights—March On!. Although I’ve been a Raleigh native for 19 years, this was my first year attending. With over 75 musicians, storytellers, dancers, authors, artists, chefs, and more, it was sure to be an exciting day. One of the true highlights of my day was visiting the “Made Especially For You By Willie Kay” exhibit. Willie Otey Kay was queen of Raleigh fashion for decades, who surpassed racial boundaries to create a successful business. I learned so much about this stylist who had been designing and making dresses for brides, proms and debutantes from all over the State. It was such a treat to see her handcrafted dresses up close. Getting back to nature with Modern Terrarium Studio
Last week The Raleigh Blog Society and triFABB collaborated for a wonderful new blogger meetup, hosted by Ramble Supply Company located in downtown Raleigh, NC. Ramble Supply Company is a home and lifestyle boutique supporting artists and makers with an eye for quality crafted goods and design made in small batches. The store offers a range of gorgeous gifts such as beautiful hand-made jewelry and textiles, as well as locally made soaps and treats. I also love that the store offers DIY classes and events to connect the local community, and the ability to meet the maker. Jessie Conner, owner of Ramble Supply Company also showed us the beautiful patio which can be rented for events. Megan George Co-Owner and Creative Director of The ZEN Succulent provided a hands on succulent terrarium workshop to promote her new book Modern Terrarium Studio. As Megan told her story about how she grew up locally and became interested in plants because of her upbringing it brought back fond memories of my childhood when I used to spend most of time helping my grandparents in their garden. Oh how I miss the days of being close to nature and having direct access to the fruits of the earth. Lately the hustle and bustle of daily life has taken me away from nature lately so this was refreshing change in my routine. I was excited about getting my hands dirty. Fun-filled weekend
Last weekend I had so much fun with my beautiful cousin who was in town for a short visit. She’s full of life and is always a lot of fun to be around. It all started on Friday night when she arrived and we stayed up late laughing and catching up. On Saturday we made our way out for an early morning run to Walmart. As we were leaving couldn’t resist having a photo shoot with the fall display of pumpkins and hay that was outside. People walking by probably thought we were crazy, but we didn’t care. lol Around mid-day we enjoyed a delicious lunch at Tupelo Honey Cafe, where Southern Food is Good for the Soul. Then we had another mini photo shoot session right outside the restaurant. But what’s a girl’s weekend without a little shopping? I remember at a very young age being mesmerized in my mother’s closet, and trying on her clothes which quickly became a hobby. As I grew older I not only enjoyed enhancing my look, but that of others, so the natural fit was to become a Fashion Stylist.
